Sinners Whew!

Sinners is labeled a psychological thriller, but it goes beyond description. A movie about vampires in the South and how a community of diverse individuals fought back, it goes beyond the classic definition of a horror genre. It mixes music, horror and the history of the Antebellum south.

Sinners

Sinners is a movie, produced, written and directed by Ryan Coogler and set in the Mississippi Delta in 1932. The Story starts out with a young Sammy played by Miles Caton a brilliant young actor and musician, walking into his father's church holding what's left of his guitar. As everyone turns to look at him you already know something has gone down. And it was big! His father calls him to the pulpit and chastises him and ask him a simple question. That question will be answered as the story goes on. I don't want to spoil it for you. But then we are taken on the crazy ride with his twin cousins Smoke and Stack played by Michael B Jordan, into the world of the supernatural.

As the story continues, we find out they're returning home to start anew. and they want to throw a party. I love how the movie takes us on the ride, with each twin together and separately. The movie brilliantly allowed us to develop a relationship with each character separately, brilliantly done in my opinion, from the outfit colors to the tremor and smoking habits to even the nuance of each twin's personality down to the type of women each one prefers.

Watching this movie, you are drawn in to the significance of the Asian community in the Delta and their symbiosis with the Black community. I liked that he made sure to be as historically accurate as possible with still the realization that this is a horror movie, a vampire movie no less, like yes, the Klan existed, yes Native Americans were around also, many questions have been answered in interviews such as the relevance of the Irish music, and when Sammie played on stage why he was so important in character development. It all starts opening night when Sammie, Delta, Slim and Pearline are on stage, it was amazing and Sammies gift is unveiled, if you want to call it that and it draws spirits and something else. Whew!

I will say for me the beauty of the scene in the juke joint took my breath away, the way the past, present and future were melded together was stunning. That alone better get him a cinematic Music award, the Score was brilliant, you could see and feel the ancestors calling from every ethnic group and their cultural renaissance! It was amazing!

From the landscape to the story it really is an amazing ride, who are the monsters? Who should we fear?

Should we let everyone in?

Who is worthy?

I'll tell you this after watching this movie I guarantee you I will keep plenty of garlic around. And for me I am not letting anyone in! HaHa!

As someone who loves the horror genre I love that he mixed everything together so it really couldn't be labeled and for me that's ok, as he showed us in Wakanda everything doesn't need a label the joy is in the vision and the representation that is presented before us. Even in oppression we find joy. That is the power of Blackness and together we will fight for our survival from those that want our souls. Make sure you watch past the credits. And let' us know what you think. Award season is going to be amazing this year! 5 claps Mr. Cooglers Sinners is a winner!
